Rolling Hills, California

Rolling Hills, CA Real Estate, Rolling Hills Area and Community Information

Rolling Hills, California, is an affluent community on the Palos Verdes Peninsula in Los Angeles County. There is no commercial development in the city, as it consists of a single gated community. The population of approximately 1,800 enjoys a bucolic landscape of ranch-like lots and horse trails running alongside many streets. Rolling Hills has the distinction of having zero traffic lights.

Developers purchased the 16,000-acre ranch previously owned by the Bixbys in 1912. After 3,000 acres were sold off to be developed into Palos Verdes Estates, the remaining acreage included the land upon which Rolling Hills was eventually developed. Efforts to stimulate the construction of homes in Rolling Hills during the Depression met with limited success. At one point, residential lots were offered near Los Verdes Country Club for $185 apiece, and none were sold. However, the area prospered following World War II. Rolling Hills was eventually incorporated in 1957.
