Torrance, California, is a city in the South Bay area of Los Angeles County. The community has grown to the point that is it now home to about 150,000 people.


The Tongva indigenous people lived in the area for many centuries prior to the arrival of the Europeans. In 1784, King Carlos III hranted land to Juan Jose Dominguez that included what is today Torrance. At the beginning of the 20th century, developer Jared Sidney Torrance hired the famous architect Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. to lay out a planned community. Torrance was founded in 1912 and incorporated in 1921. Some of the original residences still remain in what is known as Old Town Torrance. In the decades that followed the early days of Torrance, the economy was stimulated by fish canneries, agriculture, and petroleum-related industries.

Parks and Recreation
