Peninsula Treasures: A Cultural Look

The Palos Verdes Peninsula community learns, celebrates, explores, volunteers and rejoices in its many cultural organizations and activities.

The Norris Center for the Performing Arts with its adjacent Pavilion hosts drama, music, and dance programs. This theatre attracts famous stage and musical performers.

There is also a strong Fall and Spring Children’s Series as well as The Prime Time Players’ musicals which have included Mane, Hello Dolly and Oklahoma! Its resident Chamber Orchestra of the South Bay has received three awards from the National Endowment for the Arts. The Norris Center also hosts the Multicultural Association of the Peninsula which organized Festive Feasts and activities which create cultural awareness and brings a richness and variety to cultural activities. Also, many community groups utilize this facility.

The Palos Verdes Art Center reaches out to its community with its visual arts education programs and offers events, exhibits, art classes and volunteer opportunities and is celebrating its 75th anniversary. Additionally, the association receives support from a yearly fine art fair, Art for Fun(d)’s Sake, three support groups and seven art groups who present their work weekends in Malaga Cove Plaza. The Peninsula offers marvelous opportunities for artist and art lovers alike. Artists are often seen painting Pacific Coast scenes from the Palos Verdes cliffs. The Palos Verdes Art Center offers tours of well-known artists’ studios and Peninsula businesses often showcase the work of their favorite artists. Local galleries such as The Artists Studio and Kolibri Gallery in the Avenue of the Peninsula and Ferrara’s in Lunada Bay Plaza offer work by local artists. Visitors are impressed by the quality of art available. Culture is alive and well on the Palos Verdes Peninsula.

Under the direction of Maestro Joseph Valenti, professional, semi-professional and amateur musicians lend their talents and time to the Peninsula Symphony Orchestra that presets four annual concerts. Other musical talents are showcased in performances by the South Bay Chamber Music Society, the South Bay Conservatory, the Ballet Conservatory and Palos Verdes Ballet.

The South Coast Botanic Garden is a living laboratory for plant study and conducts educational programs, walks and horticultural classes.

In June of 2006, the Palos Verdes Peninsula Chamber of Commerce will present the 19th Annual Street Fair, which combines the many dimensions of the arts with affordable family fun and brings thousands of visitors to our beautiful Peninsula.
